Wakultschik is particularly renowned for his three-dimensional portraits composed of thousands of colored pencil tips. The path to this technique was a process of reduction: from early depictions of saints and collages to the singular point. “That’s where the real play with light began,” he explains. His portraits appear at once human and otherworldly, androgynous and almost angelic; they do not tell specific stories, but open up emotional spaces.
